Grocery Store

It feels like you aren't truly settled until you have your go-to grocery store.  In Seattle, it was the Trader Joe's / Whole Foods combo run.  Here in Maputo, we've had the incredible luxury of nearly all our meals being made for us by the embargada (housekeeper) of our gracious hosts.  While this is wildly convenient, our knife skills are dwindling.

You'll be pleased to know that we've taken a giant leap forward and identified our new grocery store - the Pick N' Pay!  You can get cheese and peanut butter and chocolate there.  Visitors won't have to pack anything to bring anymore.  We have yet to do a full shop there, but our reconnaissance mission was promising.  We did cheat - our friends in Swaziland, closely familiar with the old Trader Joe's / Whole Foods run, found the place first.  Only natural we would like it too, but that's what friends are for, sharing good times and and identifying reasonable cost sources of good cheese.

Without further ado, the PnP highlights:

• Kitchen dishes (this saves us an Ikea trip in the US, not to be underestimated)
• Blue cheese
• Peanut butter (classic)
• Yogurt
• Household cleaning supplies
• Fresh vegetables
• A bakery
• Vita waters (not sure about this one)
• Fancy olive oil from Portugal
• To be determined.... granola

Next we have to find our go to lady on the road selling vegetables.  So far we've seen pineapples, papaya, strawberries, bananas, spinach, collard greens, and every herb you could imagine.   It would seem you can really get anything you might want in Maputo - it just might cost more than you'd expect.
