Three Layers of Homelessness

I needed to go to Nigeria for business this past week.  That deserves a blog of its own, but in talking to Emily back in Maputo while in Abuja, I couldn't shake this sense of being generally unsettled.  Emily nailed it - we left our home in the US, we haven't moved into a place of our own in Maputo, and you're out of the country on business.  It was suddenly clear - three sweet layers of homelessness.  And also clear why it's going to feel so good to move into our new place, as it will be a new anchor for us.  It's interesting how it feels like we are building up a reputation as wanderers of the earth, and yet right now we're yearning for consistent a place of our own to settle into.

The positive side of being gone is that Emily honed her driving skills to a fine edge, cruising all over Maputo in the Green Machine.  I was thrilled to see her pull up at the airport on Saturday when I got back from Nigeria.  Like she was born behind the wheel.

Tomorrow is the big day for our move in, only 1 week late!  Naysayers are shocked at our good fortune to have rented a place when it was only framed in concrete that we are moving into just 3 1/2 weeks later!  We are really excited - the apartment and the view will be amazing.  But the next task of finding a bed, mattress, fridge, stove, couch, desk, dishes, silverware, and everything in between is just slightly daunting.
